In 2019 Gippsland Support Services was established in consultation with my business partner Jodie. Due to Gippsland being the last catchment to be released for NDIS supports, my role as a Support Coordinator was challenging based on limited services. Existing and established service providers offered supports between the hours of 9am to 5pm. As we know, a person with a Disability requires support within their home and to access the community outside of these hours. With a clear vision and mission statement, GSS was established to provide a holistic person centered approach to deliver flexible supports and services to meet participants needs. Gippsland Support Services quickly became a name that our local community trusted. 18mths ago, we commenced with 2 staff and now have 23 staff across Gippsland providing flexible supports to NDIS participants. When meeting with out participants and identifying their goals and interests, there appeared to be a common denominator that our participants wanted to develop their skills and find employment.
GSS provides supports to participants with complex needs, we needed to ensure that employment opportunities were developed with a mind set of working within participants limitations. When identifying how GSS could establish a business and provide inclusion for all, we proudly purchased a food van, which we have called Aria G's. When informing the participants we support about the recent purchase, we received an overwhelming influx calls, texts and e-mails asking if they could be involved. In consultation with our participants, some decided they would like to develop their communication skills by serving customers, others shared a love for cooking and wanted to complete a course in food handling and work along side the chef. Other's identified they would like to come up with menu ideas, be responsible for stock control, cleaning, marketing etc. Everyone has a special skill and GSS see the person, not the disability.
