Karbeethong Lodge – LEAHA – Mallacoota P-12 College get together
In May this year, Karbeethong Lodge hosted the Koori Elders from Lakes Entrance Aboriginal Health Association in a rare return to Mallacoota. The event was organized by Mallacoota P-12 College. The afternoon tea and evening meal with the LEAHA group was huge success. The music, campfire yarns and open conversations around the deeper understanding of Koori and history that followed were a wonderful thing. Over 70 people attended the event at the lodge.
The visit coincided with World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development 2019.
On Wednesday the Elders group visited the school and ran a series of workshops including damper making, marngrook, stories, music, bush tucker, possum skin cloaks and other artefacts, murals and chalk art. These workshops really brought people together and highlighted the importance of the arts for communicating ideas and honouring our cultural diversity.
We feel very honoured to have been part of this historical event and look forward to future events at the lodge. Thanks to all that were involved to make the days so successful.
